12 Day Uganda Birding and Primate Safari

12 Days

This Uganda birding and primate safari pairs the shoebill and hundreds of other birds with mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in 12 days.

This Uganda birding and primate safari is a balanced trip for travellers who love birds but also want Uganda’s famous primates. In 12 days you search for the shoebill, trek mountain gorillas and track chimpanzees.

Uganda has more than 1,000 recorded bird species in a country smaller than many others in Africa. Short drives between very different habitats make it ideal for birders.

Why choose this Uganda birding and primate safari?

  • Mabamba Swamp: a canoe trip through the papyrus to find the shoebill.
  • Lake Mburo: African finfoot, zebras and savannah birds.
  • Bwindi: Albertine Rift endemics and a mountain gorilla trek.
  • Queen Elizabeth: Kazinga Channel boat cruise and tree-climbing lions in Ishasha.
  • Kibale: chimpanzee tracking and forest birding.

Where you stay

Lodges include the Sheraton in Kampala, Mihingo Lodge or Mantana Tented Camp at Lake Mburo, Gorilla Forest Camp or Buhoma Homestead in Bwindi, Mweya Safari Lodge or Jacana Safari Lodge in Queen Elizabeth, and Primate Lodge in Kibale, or similar.

Group size

We keep groups small, with a maximum of six guests per vehicle, so everyone has a window seat and time with the guide.

Best time for a Uganda birding and primate safari

Uganda is a year-round destination. June to August and December to February are drier and best for trekking. The wetter months bring lush forest, breeding birds and fewer visitors.

Plan ahead with our Bwindi gorilla trekking guide and Uganda national parks guide, or see all Uganda safaris. Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

How much does the Uganda birding and primate safari cost?

Price on request. The cost depends on your travel dates, group size, the season and the lodges you choose, so we prepare every quote personally rather than showing one fixed price.
