Rwanda gorilla trekking is one of the most moving wildlife experiences on earth: an hour in the company of a mountain gorilla family on the forested slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. Divulge Adventures plans private Rwanda gorilla trekking safaris, including permits, lodges and transfers, and can combine your trek with chimpanzees in Nyungwe, the Big Five in Akagera or a safari in Kenya.
The home of Rwanda’s mountain gorillas, set among the volcanoes of the Virunga range. You can also track golden monkeys or hike to Dian Fossey’s former research site.

Rwanda’s savannah park in the east, where lion and rhino have been reintroduced, making it a Big Five destination alongside boat trips on Lake Ihema.
Relax on the shores of Lake Kivu after trekking, and explore Kigali’s markets, cafés and the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
Rwanda’s gorilla permits are limited each day and are a major part of the trip cost, so book well in advance, especially for June to September. Trekkers must usually be at least 15 years old. We secure your permit as part of your booking so your trekking date is confirmed before you travel.
Your day starts with a briefing at park headquarters, after which you are assigned to a gorilla family based on your fitness. The hike can take from under an hour to several hours over steep, muddy terrain. Once you reach the gorillas, you spend about one hour watching them feed, play and rest.
Want to add a classic safari? Combine your trek with the Masai Mara in Kenya, a short flight from Kigali.
Two to three days is enough for a gorilla trek from Kigali. Five to seven days lets you add golden monkeys, Nyungwe’s chimpanzees or Akagera.
A reasonable level of fitness helps, as trails can be steep, muddy and at altitude. Rangers assign groups based on fitness, and porters can carry your bag and help you on difficult sections.
Both are excellent. Rwanda is closer to its international airport and suits shorter trips, while Uganda’s permits are generally less expensive and pair well with chimpanzees and savannah parks.
Many visitors can get a visa on arrival or apply online, and the East Africa Tourist Visa can cover Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. Check current rules for your nationality before travelling.
Rwanda is best for primates, Tanzania for big savannah wildlife. Read our Rwanda vs Tanzania safari comparison.
