4 Days Rwanda Double Gorilla Trekking Safari

4 Days

This double gorilla trekking Rwanda safari gives you two treks to two different mountain gorilla families, so you can truly take in every moment.

Overview

A double gorilla trekking Rwanda safari means two separate treks, on two days, to two different mountain gorilla families. Many travellers say the first hour passes in a blur. The second trek lets you slow down, watch behaviour closely and take better photos.

This four-day safari includes both gorilla permits, a Kigali city tour, a visit to the Gorilla Guardians Village and private 4×4 transport with your own driver guide.

Why choose a double gorilla trekking Rwanda safari?

Every gorilla family is different. One may be led by a calm silverback with tiny babies, another may be a lively group of youngsters. Two treks give you two very different encounters.

Volcanoes National Park is only about 2.5 hours from Kigali on good roads, so you spend more time with the gorillas and less time travelling.

  • Photographers: a second chance for the perfect shot.
  • Wildlife lovers: see two families and compare their behaviour.
  • Peace of mind: a backup if weather spoils one trek.

What to expect on your double gorilla trekking Rwanda safari

You arrive in Kigali on day one. On day two you tour the city, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, then drive north to your lodge near the park, with the Virunga volcanoes on the horizon.

Day three is your first trek. After the 7:00 AM briefing at Kinigi, rangers assign you a family, and you hike through bamboo and montane forest to spend one hour with them. In the afternoon, the Gorilla Guardians Village shares traditional dance, music and stories.

On day four you trek again, this time to a different family, before driving back to Kigali for your flight or hotel.

How fit do you need to be?

Treks last from about one to six hours on steep, muddy ground. Moderate fitness is enough for both days, and porters can carry your bag and help on tricky sections.

Best time for double gorilla trekking Rwanda trips

Gorilla trekking runs all year. June to September and December to February bring drier trails. In the November to May low season, Rwanda offers a 30% gorilla permit discount when you also spend two nights in Akagera or Nyungwe, which can make adding a park worthwhile.

How much does the double gorilla trekking Rwanda cost?
