This gorilla photography safari takes you into the bamboo and forest of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park for an hour with a mountain gorilla family.
This gorilla photography safari is a short trip with a big reward. You travel from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, trek to a habituated family of mountain gorillas and spend one hour photographing them in their forest home.
A second trekking day with golden monkeys gives you another primate subject in the bamboo. It also gives you practice with the dim, green light of the forest.
Why choose this gorilla photography safari?
Gorilla photography is very different from savannah photography. The light is low, the vegetation is thick and you are close to the animals. A little planning makes a big difference to your results.
- One hour with the gorillas: silverbacks, mothers and playful youngsters.
- Golden monkeys: fast, colourful and great practice for forest light.
- Volcano views: the Virunga peaks above the farmland at sunrise.
- Permits arranged: we secure your gorilla and golden monkey permits in advance.
Camera tips for the gorilla photography safari
Flash is not allowed, so you will work in natural light. A fast lens or a camera that handles high ISO well is a great help. Many photographers use a 24-105 mm or 70-200 mm zoom, because the gorillas can be closer than you expect.
- Set a higher ISO (1600 to 6400) and a shutter speed of 1/250 s or more.
- Focus on the eyes, and use spot or zone focus to cut through the leaves.
- Bring a rain cover and leave large bags with the porters.
Gorilla trekking rules
Keep a distance of at least 7 metres, stay quiet and follow your ranger. Visits are limited to one hour to protect the gorillas. You must be at least 15 years old to trek.
Best time for a gorilla photography safari
You can trek all year. June to September and December to February are drier, with easier trails. The wetter months bring lush green forest and soft light, and Rwanda often offers permit discounts in the low season.
