This 6 day Rwanda safari covers Akagera’s Big Five and Volcanoes National Park’s gorillas and golden monkeys, with comfortable lodges throughout.
Overview
This 6 day Rwanda safari is our most popular way to see the country’s highlights in under a week. You spend two nights in Akagera National Park for the Big Five and two nights near Volcanoes National Park for gorillas and golden monkeys, with a night in Kigali on arrival.
It is a well-paced trip in comfortable mid-range lodges, with private 4×4 transport and an English-speaking driver guide throughout.
Why choose a 6 day Rwanda safari?
Six days is the shortest trip that does justice to both of Rwanda’s big experiences. You avoid rushing, you get a full day in Akagera, and you still have time for golden monkeys after your gorilla trek.
- First-time visitors: the classic Rwanda combination.
- Couples and friends: a balanced mix of drives and treks.
- Good value: comfortable lodges without luxury prices.
What to expect on your 6 day Rwanda safari
On arrival day you are met at the airport and taken to your Kigali hotel. Day two takes you east to Akagera for a short game drive, lunch at your lodge and a guided night drive in search of leopards and hyenas.
Day three is a full day in the park, looking for elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and rhinos. At 4:30 PM you board a boat on Lake Ihema for a sunset cruise among hippos and crocodiles.
On day four you drive to Musanze. Day five is your gorilla trek, followed by a cultural afternoon at the Gorilla Guardians Village. On day six you spend an hour with golden monkeys before driving back to Kigali.
Where you stay
Lodges include Akagera Game Lodge or Ruzizi Tented Lodge in Akagera, and Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge or Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel near the gorillas. We can upgrade to luxury lodges on request.
Best time for a 6 day Rwanda safari
The dry months, June to September and December to February, are best for game viewing and gorilla trails. The wetter months are quieter and greener, and gorilla trekking runs all year.
