This 1 day gorilla trekking Rwanda tour takes you from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park for an unforgettable hour with a mountain gorilla family, and back the same evening.
Overview
This 1 day gorilla trekking Rwanda tour is the quickest way to come face to face with wild mountain gorillas. Volcanoes National Park lies about 2.5 hours’ drive from Kigali, so you can leave before sunrise, spend an unforgettable hour with a habituated gorilla family and be back in the city by evening.
It is the perfect choice if you are in Kigali for business, a conference or a short stopover, or if you simply want the highlight of Rwanda without the extra nights. Your permit, private 4×4 transport, ranger guides and lunch are all arranged for you.
Why choose a 1 day gorilla trekking Rwanda tour?
Rwanda is one of only three countries where you can see mountain gorillas, and Volcanoes National Park is the easiest of these places to reach. Good tarmac roads run all the way from Kigali to the park headquarters at Kinigi.
That short transfer is what makes a same-day trip realistic here. In most other gorilla destinations you need at least one night near the park before your trek.
- Short on time: see the gorillas without adding nights to your trip.
- Business travellers: fit the trek around meetings in Kigali.
- Stopovers: make the most of a long layover with a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
What to expect on your 1 day gorilla trekking Rwanda tour
The day starts with an early pick-up from your Kigali hotel and a scenic drive north through the “Land of a Thousand Hills”. At Kinigi you join a short welcome and a briefing from the park rangers.
The rangers then assign each group of up to eight trekkers to one gorilla family. Families are matched to fitness levels, so tell your guide if you would prefer a gentler walk.
The hike leads through farmland and into bamboo and montane forest on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. Depending on where the family is feeding, the trek can take anywhere from about one to six hours in total.
When you reach the gorillas, you spend exactly one hour with them. You watch the silverback, mothers and playful youngsters go about their day just a few metres away.
How fit do you need to be?
You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours on steep, muddy and uneven ground at altitude. Porters can carry your bag and help you on the trickier sections, and walking sticks are provided at the start.
Best time for 1 day gorilla trekking in Rwanda
Gorilla trekking runs all year. The drier months, roughly June to September and December to February, usually mean firmer trails and easier hiking.
The wetter months bring muddier paths but lush green forest and fewer visitors. Whenever you travel, permits are limited each day, so book as early as you can.
