This Rwanda primates and Lake Kivu safari moves at a relaxed pace from Kigali to Nyungwe’s chimps, Lake Kivu’s shores and the gorillas of the Virungas.
Overview
This Rwanda primates and Lake Kivu safari is a gentle, well-rounded journey. It starts with a full day in Kigali, continues to Nyungwe for chimpanzees and the canopy walk, slows down on Lake Kivu, and ends with mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
Unlike our more active eight-day trip, there is no volcano hike. Instead you get extra time for culture, food and the lake, which makes this itinerary ideal for travellers who like a relaxed pace.
Why choose a Rwanda primates and Lake Kivu safari?
Rwanda’s three great primate experiences sit in different corners of the country. Linking them through Lake Kivu turns long drives into a scenic loop, with a beach break exactly when you need it.
- Culture lovers: a full day in Kigali and the King’s Palace.
- Primate fans: chimps, gorillas and golden monkeys.
- Slow travellers: sunset cruises and lakeside evenings.
What to expect on your Rwanda primates and Lake Kivu safari
Day two is dedicated to Kigali: the Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market and the colourful Nyamirambo neighbourhood. On day three you drive to Nyungwe via the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza.
Day four is your chimpanzee trek and the canopy walkway. On day five you try tea picking and continue to Kibuye for a sunset boat cruise among Lake Kivu’s islands. Day six includes a coffee tour and the drive north to Musanze, with a stop at the Ellen DeGeneres Campus.
Day seven is gorilla day, followed by the Gorilla Guardians Village. On day eight you trek golden monkeys and return to Kigali.
How fit do you need to be?
Average fitness is enough. Primate treks can be steep and muddy, but porters are available and your guide will set a comfortable pace.
Best time for this safari
June to September and December to February are drier and great for trekking. The green season brings fewer visitors and lush forest, and Nyungwe is beautiful in any month.
