This Kenya birding and wildlife safari is a grand loop through highlands, Rift Valley lakes, rainforest and savannah, built for birders who want it all.
This Kenya birding and wildlife safari covers almost every major habitat in the country in 15 days. You go from the forests of Mount Kenya to the lakes of the Rift Valley, the rainforest of Kakamega, the papyrus of Lake Victoria and the plains of the Masai Mara.
It is one of the best routes for building a long bird list, often more than 450 species, while still enjoying lions, elephants and rhinos.
Why choose this Kenya birding and wildlife safari?
- Mount Kenya: montane forest with turacos, trogons and green ibises.
- Bogoria and Baringo: flamingos, greater kudu, owls and hornbills.
- Kakamega Forest: Kenya’s only tropical rainforest, with great blue turacos and grey parrots.
- Lake Victoria: papyrus gonolek and other swamp specials at Dunga.
- Nakuru, Naivasha and the Mara: water birds, rhinos and the big cats.
Where you stay
The route uses Nairobi Safari Club, Serena Mountain Lodge, Naro Moru River Lodge, Lake Baringo Club, Rondo Retreat in Kakamega, Sunset Hotel in Kisumu, Sarova Lion Hill at Nakuru, Lake Naivasha Country Club and Sarova Mara Camp, or similar.
A note on the pace
Some travel days are long, but every drive includes birding stops. The full days at Mount Kenya, Baringo, Kakamega, Naivasha and the Mara give you time to slow down.
Best time for this Kenya birding and wildlife safari
October to April brings Palearctic migrants. June to October is drier and best for game viewing in the Mara. Kakamega is wet all year, so pack a rain jacket.
Read our Kakamega Forest guide and Lake Bogoria guide, or see shorter birding safaris. Nature Kenya has helpful bird lists for each region.
