14 Day Kenya Birding Tour

14 Days

This Kenya birding tour crosses the country from the Rift Valley lakes to the western rainforest, Mount Kenya and the dry north in 14 days.

This Kenya birding tour is a complete circuit of the country’s best birding regions. In two weeks you visit papyrus swamps, soda lakes, rainforest, alpine moorland and semi-desert, so your bird list grows every single day.

The route is especially good in June and July, when the weather is dry, roads are easy and many resident birds are active. It works well at other times of year too.

Why choose this Kenya birding tour?

  • Nairobi National Park: Hartlaub’s bustard and white-winged widowbird in sight of the city.
  • Kinangop Plateau: Sharpe’s longclaw, an endemic of the highland grasslands.
  • Lake Baringo: Heuglin’s courser, Jackson’s hornbill and nightjars.
  • Kakamega Forest: three nights for great blue turaco, trogons and broadbills.
  • Mount Kenya and Samburu: moorland birds, then vulturine guineafowl and Somali specials.

Where you stay

We use comfortable lodges close to the birding sites: a Nairobi hotel, Lake Naivasha Country Club, Soi Lodge at Baringo, Rondo Retreat at Kakamega, a tented camp in Kisumu, Lake Nakuru Lodge, Naro Moru River Lodge, Samburu Sopa Lodge and Serena Mountain Lodge, or similar.

Best time for a Kenya birding tour

Birding is good all year. June to September is dry and comfortable. October to April brings migrant birds from Europe and Asia, and the short rains in November make the country green.

Read our Kakamega Forest guide, see the shorter 5 day Kenya birding safari, or browse all birding safaris. Nature Kenya keeps useful lists of Kenya’s Important Bird Areas.

How much does the Kenya birding tour cost?
