This Amboseli photography safari takes you to the classic African scene: elephant herds walking in front of snow-capped Kilimanjaro.
This Amboseli photography safari gives you three nights in one of Kenya’s most photogenic parks. Amboseli is famous for large elephant families, many with long tusks, set against Mount Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania.
Three nights matter here. The mountain is often hidden by cloud, and the clearest views usually come at dawn. More mornings in the park mean more chances of the shot you came for.
Why choose this Amboseli photography safari?
Amboseli is flat and open, which makes it easy to find animals and to frame them cleanly. The swamps fed by Kilimanjaro’s underground water keep elephants, buffaloes and hippos close to the roads all year.
- Elephants below Kilimanjaro: the image most photographers come for.
- Swamp scenes: elephants half-submerged in green water and egrets at their feet.
- Dust and drama: herds walking through dust in low, golden light.
- Birds: pelicans, crowned cranes and flamingos on the seasonal lake.
What a day looks like
Mornings start early to catch the mountain before the clouds build. You return to the lodge for brunch and a rest, then head out again in the afternoon. Clouds often lift late in the day, and Kilimanjaro can appear again just before sunset.
Shooting tips for Amboseli
- Use a mid-range zoom (70-200 mm) to fit elephants and the mountain in one frame.
- Try a low angle from the open window for elephants towering over the horizon.
- Bring a cloth to cover your camera, as Amboseli is very dusty in the dry season.
Best time for an Amboseli photography safari
June to October and January to February are the driest months, with the best chance of clear mountain views. The short rains in November and the long rains from March to May bring green grass and dramatic skies, with fewer vehicles.
Many guests add the Mara afterwards. See our Amboseli and Masai Mara safari or the full list of photography safaris. Pack with our Kenya safari packing list, and see the Kenya Wildlife Service website for park information.
How much does the Amboseli photography safari cost?
