7 Day Kenya Wildlife Photography Safari

7 Days

This Kenya wildlife photography safari links four very different parks, so your images range from desert-adapted giraffes to rhinos, flamingos and big cats.

This Kenya wildlife photography safari is for photographers who want variety. In seven days you move from the dry north to the green highlands, the Rift Valley and finally the open plains of the Masai Mara.

Each park adds subjects you will not find in the others. That means a portfolio with real range, not a hundred pictures of the same scene.

Why choose this Kenya wildlife photography safari?

Many safaris focus on one park. This one is planned like a photo assignment, with the timing of each drive matched to the light and to where the animals are most active.

  • Samburu: reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, gerenuks and Beisa oryx, the “Samburu Special Five”.
  • Ol Pejeta: black and white rhinos, with Mount Kenya behind them on clear mornings.
  • Lake Nakuru: flamingos, pelicans and rhinos along the shore.
  • Masai Mara: lions, cheetahs, leopards and endless open grassland.

Photography on the road

Your private pop-up roof 4×4 has bean bags and charging points. Drives start early and end late, and the middle of the day is free for rest and editing. Your guide plans the route so you are rarely shooting into the sun.

Samburu and Ol Pejeta

Samburu’s red soil, doum palms and the Ewaso Ng’iro River make warm, colourful backgrounds. At Ol Pejeta you can photograph rhinos at close range, and the conservancy is also home to chimpanzees at the Sweetwaters sanctuary.

Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara

Nakuru gives you water birds and rhinos in one frame. The last three days in the Mara are all about the cats, with time to wait for action and the chance of river crossings from July to October.

Best time for a Kenya wildlife photography safari

June to October and January to February are the driest months, with easy roads and animals gathered near water. The green season brings fewer vehicles and dramatic skies, and Samburu stays dry for most of the year.

Like the north? Our Ol Pejeta, Meru and Samburu safari goes deeper. For a leopard focus, see our black leopard and rhino photo safari, and browse all wildlife photography safaris. Find official park information on the Kenya Wildlife Service website.
