1 Day Mount Bisoke Hike to the Crater Lake

1 Day

This Mount Bisoke hike takes you from Kigali to the summit crater lake of a dormant Virunga volcano and back in one unforgettable day.

Overview

The Mount Bisoke hike is one of the most rewarding day adventures in Rwanda. Bisoke rises to 3,711 metres on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and its summit holds a beautiful crater lake about 400 metres across.

This guided trip leaves Kigali before sunrise and returns the same evening. Your permit, armed ranger guides, private 4×4 transport and a packed lunch are all arranged, so all you need to bring is good boots and energy.

Why choose this Mount Bisoke hike?

Bisoke is the most popular volcano climb in Volcanoes National Park because it packs a lot into one day. You pass through several vegetation zones, from farmland to bamboo and then moss-draped Hagenia and Hypericum forest.

No technical climbing skills are needed. It is a steady, steep walk that suits anyone with reasonable fitness, and the views over the Virunga chain are a big reward.

  • Short on time: a full volcano adventure without adding nights.
  • Gorilla trekkers: a great extra day before or after your gorilla trek.
  • Hikers: one of the most scenic day climbs in East Africa.

What to expect on the Mount Bisoke hike

After the 7:00 AM briefing at Kinigi park headquarters, you drive to the trailhead and start climbing with your rangers. The trail is steep in places and often muddy, so walking sticks are handed out at the start.

Most hikers reach the crater rim in about four hours. On a clear day the lake below the rim looks almost unreal, framed by giant lobelias and mist. The descent takes another two to three hours.

Keep your eyes open on the way. Rangers often point out signs of forest buffaloes and elephants, and the forest is full of birds.

How fit do you need to be?

You should be comfortable walking uphill for several hours at altitude. Go at your own pace, drink plenty of water and consider hiring a porter to carry your bag. Porters are local community members and the fee goes straight to them.

Best time for a Mount Bisoke hike

You can hike Bisoke all year. The drier months, roughly June to September and December to February, give firmer trails and clearer views of the crater lake. In the rainy months, bring good rain gear and expect thick mud.

What to pack

  • Waterproof hiking boots and gaiters
  • Rain jacket and a warm fleece for the summit
  • Gardening gloves for grabbing vegetation
  • Snacks, sunscreen and a hat
  • Your passport to check in for the permit
