17 Day Kenya Birding Expedition

17 Days

This Kenya birding expedition is our longest Kenyan birding route, built for keen listers who want the north, west and south in one trip.

This Kenya birding expedition runs for 17 days and visits every major birding region in Kenya except the coast. It is ideal from October to December, when migrants from Europe and Asia arrive and the rains turn the land green.

The route starts with Mount Kenya’s forests, moves into the dry north, crosses the Rift Valley, spends three nights in Kakamega and finishes with the Masai Mara and Lake Naivasha.

Why choose this Kenya birding expedition?

  • Thika and Mount Kenya: Hinde’s babbler, Hartlaub’s turaco and Ayres’s hawk-eagle.
  • Samburu and Buffalo Springs: Somali specials, sandgrouse and pygmy falcon.
  • Nakuru and Baringo: flamingos, pelicans, owls and Heuglin’s courser.
  • Kakamega: three nights in Kenya’s only rainforest.
  • Masai Mara: three nights for raptors, cranes, longclaws and big cats.

Where you stay

Lodges include Nairobi Safari Club, Castle Forest Lodge, Samburu Lodge, Naro Moru River Lodge, Sarova Lion Hill, Soi Lodge, Rondo Retreat, Mara Serena Lodge, Mara Sentrim Camp and Lake Naivasha Country Club, or similar.

Best time for a Kenya birding expedition

October to December is ideal for migrants and breeding colours. January to March is also excellent. In the dry season from June to September, birding is easier but fewer migrants are present.
