3 Day Masai Mara Photography Safari

3 Days

This Masai Mara photography safari gives you three days of golden light, big cats and a private vehicle that stops when you want it to.

This Masai Mara photography safari is built around one thing: being in the right place when the light is good. You leave camp before sunrise, stay out through the soft evening glow, and spend the harsh midday hours resting, editing and backing up your cards.

The Masai Mara is one of the best places in Africa to photograph lions, cheetahs and leopards. Open grassland, scattered acacias and big skies give clean backgrounds, and the cats here are used to vehicles.

Why choose this Masai Mara photography safari?

On a normal group safari you share the vehicle and the schedule. Here the vehicle is private, so you decide how long to wait at a sighting. If a cheetah is about to hunt, we stay. If the light is flat, we move on.

  • Private pop-up roof 4×4: room for long lenses and a clear view on every side.
  • Bean bags and charging: steady support for big lenses and power between drives.
  • Light-led timing: early starts and late returns, with packed breakfasts when needed.
  • A guide who reads behaviour: positioning for the sun, the wind and the animal’s direction.

What you can photograph

Lions are the stars, and prides often rest in the open in the early morning. Cheetahs hunt in daylight, which makes them perfect subjects. Leopards are harder to find but are seen along the riverine forest.

Between the cats you will have elephants, giraffes, topi on termite mounds, hyenas and huge skies at sunset. From July to October the wildebeest migration adds river crossings, covered in our Mara River crossing safari.

Optional balloon flight

A sunrise balloon flight gives you aerial images of herds and rivers that you cannot get from the ground. Read our Masai Mara balloon safari guide before you decide, and book early in high season.

Best time for a Masai Mara photography safari

The Mara is good all year. July to October brings the migration and the most action, but also the most vehicles. January to March is quieter, with green grass and plenty of young animals. The long rains in April and May can make roads muddy, but the light after a storm is beautiful.

Camera tips for the Mara

  • Bring a 100-400 mm or 150-600 mm zoom for wildlife and a wide lens for landscapes.
  • Use a fast shutter speed (1/2000 s or more) for running cheetahs and birds in flight.
  • Pack at least two batteries and plenty of memory cards. Dust is everywhere, so bring a blower.
