This Naro Moru to Rutundu trek links Mount Kenya’s most beautiful lakes, from Lake Hohnel below the peaks to Lake Alice and Lake Rutundu on the remote northern moorland.
This Naro Moru to Rutundu trek is a 7-day lakes journey across Mount Kenya, covering about 60 km. You start at Naro Moru Gate, camp beside Lake Hohnel and below Point John, summit Point Lenana (4,985 m) at dawn, then wander past Lake Michaelson, Lake Ellis and Lake Alice before finishing at Lake Rutundu. It is a non-technical trek for fit walkers who love remote scenery.
Why choose the Naro Moru to Rutundu trek?
Most Mount Kenya treks go up and down the same busy routes. This one spends most of its time on the quiet eastern and northern moorlands, where you can walk all day without meeting another group. Lake Alice is the largest lake on the mountain, and the trail to it crosses some of Mount Kenya’s least-visited country.
The summit is optional: if you prefer, you can rest by Lake Michaelson or fish (with a Kenya Wildlife Service permit) while others climb.
What to expect on the Naro Moru to Rutundu trek
Days 1 and 2 climb from the Met Station to Lake Hohnel (about 3,950 m) and American Camp below Point John (about 4,450 m). Day 3 is summit day, with Point Lenana at sunrise and a descent to Lake Michaelson. Days 4 to 6 head north past Lake Ellis and the Mugi Hills to Lake Alice and Lake Rutundu, including one long 9-hour day. On day 7 you walk out through the forest to the Rutundu road and drive to Nairobi.
When is the best time for this trek?
January to February and late June to early October bring the driest conditions. The northern moorland can be boggy after rain.
