How Much Does a Serengeti Safari Cost Once Fees, Camps and Flights Are Counted?

A Serengeti safari cost usually runs from about US$250 per person per day on a shared camping trip to US$1,500 or more at a luxury camp, sharing a room. Park entry alone is US$82.60 per adult for each 24 hours in high season, so government fees set a floor that every budget sits on.

Quotes for a Serengeti safari cost swing wildly because they bundle different things: some include Ngorongoro fees and flights, others leave out the nightly concession fee or the crater descent. This guide, written by our Nairobi team, breaks the bill into its real parts, shows daily rates by tier and season, and compares what our own Serengeti itineraries cost.

What Goes Into a Serengeti Safari Cost?

A Serengeti safari cost is made of six parts: park entry, the nightly concession fee, Ngorongoro fees on the way in and out, your vehicle and guide, accommodation with meals, and transport to the park. Fees are fixed by the government; the other parts are where tiers and seasons change the price.

The table below shows how a typical Serengeti safari cost builds up for one adult. Fee figures come from the current Tanzania National Parks schedule, which includes 18% VAT; the rest are estimates based on published rate bands and our own trip pricing.

Cost item Typical amount What to know
Serengeti entry US$82.60 per 24 hours (US$70.80 mid-March to mid-May) Charged per 24-hour period from the time you enter, not per calendar day
Concession fee US$59-70.80 per night Only if you sleep at a lodge or permanent camp inside the park; often built into the room rate
Public campsite US$35.40 per night Replaces the concession fee on camping trips
Ngorongoro transit US$70.80 per 24 hours The main road from Arusha crosses the conservation area, usually twice
Vehicle and guide Shared across the group A private 4×4 with a driver-guide costs the same whether two or six people ride in it
Room and meals From under US$100 to over US$1,000 per night Full board is normal; luxury camps add drinks and activities

Serengeti park fees by season

The Serengeti charges US$82.60 per adult from 16 May to 14 March and US$70.80 from 15 March to 15 May, with children aged 5 to 15 paying US$23.60 (checked November 2026). Tanzania National Parks also lists a nightly concession fee for in-park lodges: US$70.80 per adult from July to September and US$59 from October to June. Confirm both on the official Tanzania National Parks website before booking, because tour-industry sources expect future rises.

A practical floor: three nights at a camp inside the park in November costs 3 x US$82.60 entry plus 3 x US$59 concession, or about US$425 per adult, before you add a bed, a meal or a vehicle. That fee floor sits under every Serengeti safari cost, whichever tier you choose. Our full guide to Tanzania park fees covers Tarangire, Manyara and the other northern parks.

How Much Does a Serengeti Safari Cost Per Person Per Day?

Per person per day, a Serengeti safari cost is roughly US$250-400 on a shared camping safari, US$350-800 with mid-range lodges and a private vehicle, and US$850-1,500 or more at luxury tented camps. These are estimates for two people sharing, including park fees, and exclude international flights and tips.

Budget tier Per person per day (estimate) What you usually get
Budget camping US$250-400 Shared or small-group vehicle, public campsites, dome tents, cook on the trip
Mid-range US$350-800 Private 4×4, lodges or tented camps with en-suite rooms, full board
Luxury US$850-1,500+ Small camps in prime areas, private guide, drinks and extras included, often fly-in

Group size changes your Serengeti safari cost more than most people expect. The vehicle, fuel and guide are a fixed daily cost, so two travellers pay roughly double per head what a group of six pays for the same private car. Solo travellers often pay a single supplement on rooms as well.

Budget camping safaris

Camping is the simplest way to keep a Serengeti safari cost low. Public campsites cost US$35.40 per adult per night instead of the concession fee, and the crew sets up tents and cooks. Facilities are basic, nights on the open plains can feel cool, and you may share the vehicle with strangers, but you are sleeping in the heart of the park.

Mid-range lodges and tented camps

Mid-range is where most first-time visitors land, balancing comfort against the overall Serengeti safari cost. You get a private vehicle that stops when you want, a proper bed, hot showers and three meals a day. Long road-based circuits often average lower per day than this band because the nights in Karatu or near Tarangire cost less than nights inside the Serengeti itself.

Serengeti safari cost at the luxury end

Luxury camps charge for location, space and service: a handful of tents near the herds, expert guides, private vehicles and all-inclusive drinks. The Serengeti safari cost here climbs fastest in July to October in the north, when camps near the Mara River are in demand and the higher concession fee applies. Our pick of the best Serengeti camps by area and budget describes the main options.

Does the Time of Year Change Serengeti Prices?

Yes. A Serengeti safari cost is lowest from April to mid-May, when park entry drops to US$70.80 and camps offer green-season rates, and highest from July to October, when the herds reach the north and the concession fee rises. December to March sits in between, with calving-season demand in the south.

Period Where the herds usually are Effect on price
December to March Southern plains and Ndutu (calving from late January) High demand for Ndutu camps; the Ndutu area is inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area
April to mid-May Southern and central plains Lowest park entry, green-season discounts, some camps closed
Late May to July Central Serengeti and the Western Corridor Prices climb toward peak; good value in late May and June
July to October Northern Serengeti and Mara River crossings Peak lodge rates and the higher US$70.80 concession fee
November Herds moving south through the east and centre Short rains bring softer rates before the festive season

Migration timing moves with the rains, so treat these months as patterns rather than promises, and expect the Serengeti safari cost to follow demand around the herds. Our Great Migration month-by-month guide explains where the herds tend to be, and the Serengeti calving season guide covers the southern plains in detail.

How the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Adds to the Bill

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area adds to almost every Serengeti safari cost: US$70.80 per adult for every 24 hours you spend in it, because the main road from Arusha and Karatu to the Serengeti runs through it. Most road safaris pay it twice, on the way in and on the way out (checked November 2026).

Driving down into the crater adds a crater service fee of US$295 per vehicle per descent. Shared by four people that is under US$75 each, but a couple in a private car carries US$147.50 each. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority sets these fees separately from the national parks, so ask whether your quote includes both transits and the descent. If you are weighing how many days to give each, our Serengeti vs Ngorongoro guide helps you split the time.

Calving season and Ndutu

Ndutu, the hub of the calving season, lies inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area rather than the national park. Lodges there charge Ngorongoro fees for each night instead of Serengeti fees, so the Serengeti safari cost of a January trip based at Ndutu works differently from a central Serengeti trip.

Is It Cheaper to Drive or Fly to the Serengeti?

Driving is cheaper, flying saves time. A road safari from Arusha takes around seven hours to the central Serengeti and needs no flight tickets, while a scheduled light aircraft reaches Seronera airstrip in about 45 minutes but adds a fare in each direction and limits you to 15 kg of luggage in a soft bag.

The road route is not wasted time: it passes the Ngorongoro highlands and, on most itineraries, Tarangire or Lake Manyara. Flying makes most sense for short trips, for the far north around Kogatende, and for travellers who would rather pay than spend a day in the car. Many trips mix both, driving in and flying out, which keeps the Serengeti safari cost in check while saving the long drive back. See our fly-in safari packages for flying routes.

Fares change with season and airline, so we price flights in each written quote rather than estimate them here. Ask for them as a separate line, so you can compare one Serengeti safari cost with another like for like.

What Do Our Serengeti Trips Cost?

Our Serengeti trips start from USD 2,195 per adult for five days and run to USD 6,180 per adult for eight days with upgraded lodges and extra activities. Each Serengeti safari cost below comes from our trip pages, include park fees, and depend on dates, group size and lodge availability.

Trip Length From (per adult) Style
5 Days Northern Tanzania Safari 5 days, 4 nights USD 2,195 Road, 3 nights in a Serengeti tented camp, flight to Zanzibar
8 Day Great Migration Northern Tanzania 8 days, 7 nights USD 2,526 Road circuit with Tarangire, Manyara, crater and Lake Eyasi
4-Day Serengeti Wildebeest Migration Safari 4 days, 3 nights USD 3,392 Fly-in to Kogatende with a balloon flight on the itinerary
8 Day Tanzania Safari, Premium Parks 8 days, 7 nights USD 3,395 Private Land Cruiser, mid-range lodges, crater and concession fees included
8-Day Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti Safari 8 days, 7 nights USD 6,180 Comfort lodges plus cycling, canoeing and a night drive

Divided by days, the Serengeti safari cost of these trips works out at roughly US$315 to US$850 per person per day. The fly-in trip costs the most per day because the flights and a balloon flight are built in; the long road circuits cost the least because several nights fall outside the Serengeti. Which Extras Should You Budget For?

The extras most often left out of a Serengeti quote are tips, the balloon flight, drinks, visas and travel insurance. Together they can add 10-20% to the trip, so build them into your Serengeti safari cost from the start rather than meeting them at the end.

  • Tips: many travellers budget about US$10-20 per guest per day for the guide and US$5-15 for camp staff, more on private trips.
  • Balloon flight: listed at US$599 per person as an optional extra on one of our trip pages; our hot air balloon safari guide explains the experience.
  • Visa: most visitors need a Tanzania eVisa; our Tanzania visa guide covers costs and steps.
  • Drinks and laundry: often extra at mid-range lodges, included at many luxury camps.
  • Insurance: make sure it covers medical evacuation from remote areas.

Ways to lower your Serengeti safari cost

Travel in April, May, early June or November, share the vehicle with family or friends, and give the Serengeti three focused nights rather than five thin ones. Choosing a camp inside the park but outside the busiest zone for your month often brings rates down without losing wildlife.

Insider Tips

  • Read the inclusions: check for park, concession, Ngorongoro transit and crater fees by name
  • Count 24-hour periods: entry times decide how many park fees you pay; a good guide plans gate times
  • Price the group: a private 4×4 for four costs far less per head than for two
  • Mind the north: July to October in Kogatende carries peak rates and the higher concession fee
  • Pack soft: light aircraft allow 15 kg in a soft bag; excess weight may need an extra seat
  • Book early for peak: calving and river-crossing camps fill months ahead

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 3-day Serengeti safari cost?

A 3-day Serengeti safari cost starts at about US$750 to US$1,200 per person camping and US$1,050 to US$2,400 at mid-range lodges. Fly-in luxury trips can pass US$4,000. Three nights of park and concession fees alone come to about US$425 per adult in most months.

Is it cheaper to stay inside or outside the Serengeti?

Staying outside the Serengeti saves the nightly concession fee of US$59 to US$70.80 per adult, but the park is so large that you lose hours driving to the wildlife each day. For most travellers, a camp inside the park gives far better value per hour of game viewing, especially during the migration.

When is the cheapest time for a Serengeti safari?

The lowest Serengeti safari cost comes in the long rains from about April to mid-May. Park entry drops to US$70.80 per adult from 15 March to 15 May, many camps cut their rates, and some close. Roads can be muddy, but the south and centre stay green and quiet, with resident predators.

Do Serengeti safari prices include park fees?

Most Serengeti safari prices from a licensed operator include park entry, concession and Ngorongoro fees, but check the inclusions list line by line. The items most often left out are the Ngorongoro crater service fee, domestic flights, the balloon flight, tips, drinks and visas. A clear quote names each fee it covers.

How many days do you need in the Serengeti?

Three nights in the Serengeti is the sweet spot for most first visits, giving two full days of game drives after the long drive or flight in. Two nights feels rushed by road. Four or more nights suits photographers and anyone splitting time between two areas, such as the centre and the north.

Final Thoughts

Start your sums with the fixed part of any Serengeti safari cost: around US$140 to US$155 per adult per night in park and concession fees, plus Ngorongoro transits. Then choose the tier, season and travel style that fit, knowing that April to June and November give the most for your money.

Your own Serengeti safari cost depends on a handful of choices. If you send us your dates, group size and the wildlife you most want to see, we will show you a line-by-line quote so you can see exactly where each dollar goes.
