Lemosho vs Machame – glacier on top of Kilimanjaro under a cloudy sky

Lemosho vs Machame Comes Down to One Extra Night and a Quieter Start

Lemosho vs Machame comes down to time, crowds and how gently you want to climb. Both Kilimanjaro routes end with the same summit night from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), but Lemosho starts on the quiet western side and usually takes 8 days, while Machame starts in the southern forest and fits into 7.

Most Lemosho vs Machame comparisons stop at “Lemosho is longer and prettier”. True, but that does not tell you whether the extra day and cost are worth it for you. Below we compare them day by day, put rough park-fee numbers on the difference, and explain which climbers we would steer towards each route from our base in Nairobi.

What Is the Real Difference Between Lemosho and Machame?

The real difference between Lemosho and Machame is the first half of the climb. Lemosho takes two or three quiet days through the western forest and across the Shira Plateau, while Machame climbs more steeply from the south. After the trails meet, both follow the same southern circuit to the summit and down.

That shared second half matters. The Lava Tower acclimatisation day, the Barranco Wall, the summit night and the descent to Mweka are identical on both. So when you weigh Lemosho vs Machame, you are really choosing how you want to spend your first few days, and how much time your body gets to adapt before the hard part.

In the Lemosho vs Machame choice there is no hut option: both are camping routes, so you sleep in tents and a crew of guides, cooks and porters carries the camp. For a wider look at all seven trails, including Rongai and the Northern Circuit, see our guide to how the Kilimanjaro routes compare.

How Do the First Three Days Compare?

The first three days are where Lemosho vs Machame feels like two different climbs. Lemosho walks through quiet forest, then crosses the whole Shira Plateau in easy stages. Machame climbs about 1,000 m through busy forest on day one and onto the plateau’s edge on day two.

Lemosho vs Machame on day one: the Lemosho start

Lemosho begins with registration at Londorossi Gate, roughly 2 hours by road from Moshi, then a further drive of about 12 km to the trailhead. The first walk is short, around 5 to 6 km through forest to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp at about 2,800 m. Day two climbs out of the trees to Shira 1 Camp at about 3,500 m.

On a typical 8 day itinerary, day three crosses the plateau to Moir Hut at about 4,200 m, with views of Kibo’s western face. Shorter 7 day versions go to Shira 2 instead and join the Machame trail there. Either way, you have slept at three or four rising altitudes before Lava Tower.

The Machame start, days 1 and 2

Machame starts about an hour’s drive from Moshi and climbs steadily through wet montane forest to Machame Camp at about 2,835 m. Day two is short in distance, around 5 km, but steep, finishing at Shira 2 (also called Shira Cave Camp) at about 3,850 m. That is a jump of roughly 1,000 m in sleeping altitude in a single night.

From day three the two trails share the same line: up to Lava Tower at about 4,600 m for lunch, then down to sleep at Barranco Camp at about 3,900 m. This climb-high, sleep-low day is one of the main reasons both routes have good summit records.

Which Route Gives You the Better Summit Chances?

On summit chances, Lemosho vs Machame tips towards Lemosho: 8 days generally beats Machame on 7, because it adds a night and gains height in smaller steps. Machame on 7 days is still a good acclimatisation profile. The weak option is a 6 day Machame, which skips Karanga Camp and goes straight from Barranco to Barafu.

Mountain medicine guidance commonly suggests that, above 3,000 m, your sleeping altitude should rise by no more than about 500 m a night, with a rest or acclimatisation day every three to four days. Neither route follows that perfectly, but Lemosho’s plateau nights come closer than Machame’s big second-day jump. If altitude has bothered you before, that Lemosho vs Machame difference matters.

Altitude sickness can affect fit, young climbers as easily as anyone, and fitness does not protect you. Our post on altitude sickness on the Machame route covers the warning signs and why guides insist on “pole pole”, walking slowly from day one.

Is Lemosho vs Machame a big difference in difficulty?

Lemosho vs Machame is not a big difference in technical difficulty, because the hardest parts are shared. The Barranco Wall is a non-technical scramble where you use your hands, and most groups take an hour or so to get up it. Summit night, roughly 1,200 m of ascent from Barafu Camp in the cold and dark, is the same on both.

Where you feel the Lemosho vs Machame difference is in your legs and head during the first days. Machame’s steeper start tires people early, while Lemosho’s longer, flatter plateau stages are easier going. Over the whole climb, Lemosho is more walking but usually less strain.

How Much More Does Lemosho Cost?

On cost, Lemosho vs Machame usually means a few hundred US dollars more per person for Lemosho. Park fees alone add roughly US$140 for the extra day, and the longer drive to Londorossi Gate and an extra day of crew wages, food and gas add more on top.

Kilimanjaro park fees are charged per person, per day and per night. Tanzania National Parks lists the Kilimanjaro conservation fee at US$70 per international adult per day, and recent 2026 tariff reports add US$50 a night for camping, a one-off US$20 rescue fee and 18% VAT (checked October 2026). Confirm the current tariff before you book.

Lemosho vs Machame climb Days and nights Estimated park fees per adult

Lemosho (shorter version) 7 days, 6 nights About US$955

These are our estimates including VAT; they exclude guides, porters, food, transfers, hotels and tips. Our Tanzania park fees guide covers the safari parks if you plan to add a game drive afterwards. When you compare quotes for Lemosho vs Machame, check that both include the same fees, the same number of nights and the same crew-to-climber ratio, or the cheaper one may simply be shorter.

Crowds and Scenery on Each Route

For crowds and scenery, Lemosho vs Machame is clear: Machame is the more crowded and Lemosho the more scenic in its first days. Machame is the most popular camping route on Kilimanjaro, while Lemosho stays quiet until it meets the Machame trail, after which both share the same camps.

How busy does Machame get?

Machame gets busiest in the drier months, roughly late June to October and January to early March, and over the Christmas and New Year weeks. At those times Machame Camp and Shira 2 can hold a lot of tents, and the Barranco Wall can back up in the morning as groups queue at narrow steps. Our guide to the best time to climb Kilimanjaro goes through each month’s weather and crowds.

What will you see on Lemosho that you miss on Machame?

Lemosho adds the quieter western forest and the full width of the Shira Plateau, one of the most open, sweeping landscapes on the mountain. From Lava Tower onwards the views are the same: the Breach Wall, the southern glaciers and, on clear mornings, Mount Meru floating above the clouds to the west.

Lemosho vs Machame by Traveller Type

The right choice in the Lemosho vs Machame debate depends on your days, your budget and how you handle altitude. As a rule we suggest Lemosho on 8 days when you can spare it, and Machame on 7 when you cannot, rather than squeezing either route.

  • First climb, 8 or more days free: Lemosho on 8 days. It is the route we would pick for most first-timers.
  • First climb, only 7 days: Machame on 7 days rather than a rushed 7 day Lemosho, which loses the plateau night that makes Lemosho worthwhile.
  • Altitude has bothered you before: Lemosho on 8 days, or ask about adding a further night.
  • Tighter budget: Machame on 7 days. Never save money by dropping to 6 days.
  • You want solitude and photographs: Lemosho, for the quiet western forest and the Shira crossing.

Insider Tips

  • Count nights, not days: Two Lemosho vs Machame quotes can differ by a night; compare them camp by camp.
  • Ask where the trails meet: A 7 day Lemosho that joins Machame at Shira 2 skips most of what makes Lemosho special.
  • Book early for peak months: July to September and the Christmas weeks fill fast on both routes.
  • Bring trekking poles: They help on the Barranco Wall approach and save your knees on the Mweka descent.
  • Insure for altitude: Make sure your travel insurance covers trekking to 6,000 m and helicopter evacuation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lemosho better than Machame for beginners?

Lemosho is usually better for beginners who can spare 8 days, because its gentler first days and extra plateau night give the body more time to adjust to altitude. Machame on 7 days is a sound choice for beginners short of time, but avoid the 6 day version on a first climb.

Is Lemosho harder than Machame?

No, Lemosho is not harder than Machame overall. From Lava Tower to the summit the two routes are the same trail, including the Barranco Wall and the night climb from Barafu Camp. Lemosho is longer at about 70 km against about 62 km, but its opening days are gentler, so most climbers find it the easier of the two on the body.

How much more does Lemosho cost than Machame?

Lemosho usually costs a few hundred US dollars more than Machame per person. Park fees alone add roughly US$140 for the extra day (about US$1,100 for 8 days against about US$955 for 7 days, fees checked October 2026), and the longer transfer to Londorossi Gate and an extra day of crew wages add the rest.

Do Lemosho and Machame meet on Kilimanjaro?

Yes, Lemosho and Machame meet on the Shira Plateau or, on 8 day itineraries that go via Moir Hut, at Lava Tower at about 4,600 m. From there both routes share the southern circuit through Barranco, Karanga and Barafu camps, reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) from the same direction and come down the Mweka trail.

Which is more crowded, Lemosho or Machame?

Machame is more crowded than Lemosho, because it is the most popular camping route on Kilimanjaro and its gate is the easiest to reach from Moshi. Lemosho is much quieter for its first two or three days, but once the two trails meet near Lava Tower you share the same camps and the Barranco Wall with Machame climbers.

Final Thoughts

Both share the same summit and the same hard second half; Lemosho simply buys you a quieter, gentler start and an extra night to adjust.
