Kenya Honeymoon Safari: Where to Go, Best Time, Costs and Itineraries

A Kenya honeymoon safari pairs three or four nights in the Masai Mara or another wildlife area with a few slow days on the Indian Ocean coast. The best time is late June to October or January to February, and 10 to 12 days lets you enjoy both without rushing from camp to camp.

Planning a honeymoon is already a big job, and choosing between dozens of camps, parks and beaches can take the fun out of it. This guide, written by our safari team in Nairobi, explains where to go, when to travel, what it really costs and how to build an itinerary that feels romantic rather than rushed.

What Makes a Kenya Honeymoon Safari Special?

A Kenya honeymoon safari is special because it combines world-class wildlife, intimate tented camps and a tropical beach in one short, easy trip. Domestic flights link the parks and the coast in about an hour or two, so you spend your time together rather than in transit.

Kenya also gives couples real choice. You can stay in a private conservancy next to the Masai Mara where vehicle numbers are limited, add a night drive or a guided walk, then fly to a beach house in Lamu where there are no cars at all. Few countries let you move from lions on the savannah to dhow sailing in the same week.

Another advantage is flexibility. A Kenya honeymoon safari can be built around a budget, a date or a single dream sighting, and it works well as a private trip with your own vehicle and guide. If you are still weighing up costs, our full Kenya safari cost guide breaks down every line of a typical trip.

Where to Go on a Kenya Honeymoon Safari

The best places for a Kenya honeymoon safari are the Masai Mara and its private conservancies for big cats, Amboseli for elephants under Kilimanjaro, Laikipia for rhinos and exclusive lodges, and Samburu for rare northern wildlife. Most couples choose two parks, then finish on the coast.

Masai Mara and the private conservancies

The Masai Mara is the natural first choice. Lions, cheetahs and leopards are seen year-round, and from about July to October the Great Migration adds huge herds of wildebeest and zebra. For a honeymoon, consider staying in one of the conservancies that border the reserve, where camps are small, game drives are less crowded and night drives and walks are allowed.

Our guide to the Masai Mara reserve versus the conservancies explains the trade-offs, and our list of Masai Mara camps by budget shows the range of places to stay.

Amboseli

Amboseli National Park is known for its large elephant herds and, on clear mornings, the view of Kilimanjaro rising over the plains. It is about a four to five hour drive from Nairobi or a short flight, and it pairs well with the Mara for couples who want two very different landscapes. Our Amboseli National Park guide covers what to see there.

Laikipia and Ol Pejeta

Laikipia, north of Mount Kenya, is a patchwork of private ranches and conservancies with some of the most exclusive lodges in East Africa. It suits couples who want privacy, horse riding, walking safaris and good chances of seeing black and white rhinos. Read more in our guide to the Laikipia wilderness.

Samburu and Lake Naivasha

Samburu brings dry riverine country and species you will not see in the south, such as the reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra. Lake Naivasha is a gentle stopover between Nairobi and the Mara, with boat rides among hippos and walks on Crescent Island, and it breaks up the drive nicely if you travel by road.

Which Kenyan Beach Is Best After the Safari?

Diani is the best Kenyan beach for most honeymooners, with long white sand, warm water and a wide choice of boutique hotels. Lamu suits couples who want culture, quiet and old Swahili architecture, while Watamu offers a calmer coast with coral gardens and a marine park.

Diani lies south of Mombasa and has its own airstrip at Ukunda. From the Masai Mara, flights usually connect through Wilson Airport in Nairobi. Highlights include snorkelling and dolphin trips to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park off Wasini Island, where Kenya Wildlife Service charged non-residents US$25 per day after its October 2025 fee review (checked October 2026).

Lamu is reached by a flight to Manda Island and a short boat ride. Lamu Old Town is listed by UNESCO as the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, and you can read the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Lamu Old Town before you go. Days here revolve around dhow sailing, quiet beaches and long seafood dinners.

If you would rather finish on an island in Tanzania, our Zanzibar beach extension guide shows how to add it to a Kenya honeymoon safari with a short regional flight.

Beach Best for Getting there Feel
Diani Classic white sand, water sports, boutique hotels Fly to Ukunda (Diani) airstrip, usually via Nairobi Relaxed resort strip
Lamu and Manda Culture, privacy, dhow sailing Fly to Manda, then boat transfer Slow, car-free, historic
Watamu Snorkelling, quieter coast, marine park Fly to Malindi, then about 30 minutes by road Laid-back and low-rise

When Is the Best Time for a Kenya Honeymoon Safari?

The best time for a Kenya honeymoon safari is late June to October, when the parks are dry and the migration is usually in the Masai Mara. January and February are the best-value alternative, with good game viewing, fewer vehicles and hot, calm beach weather on the coast.

Kenya has two rainy seasons: the long rains from about March to May and the short rains from about late October to December. The short rains usually fall as afternoon showers and rarely spoil a safari, while April and May can be very wet and some coastal and northern lodges close. Our guide to the best time to visit the Masai Mara goes into more detail.

Months Safari conditions Beach conditions Honeymoon verdict
January-February Dry, green, good predator viewing Hot, sunny, calm sea Excellent value
March Warm, rains may start late in the month Hot and humid Good, last of the dry weather
April-May Long rains, lush, lowest rates Wet, some lodges close Only for budget-minded couples
June Drying out, lower rates early in the month Breezy, cooler Very good shoulder month
July-October Dry season, migration in the Mara Breezy, pleasant Best overall, book early
November-December Short rains, green, baby animals Hot from mid-December Good, avoid peak festive dates

Remember the Masai Mara fee doubles from US$100 to US$200 per adult per day from July, so a June or January honeymoon can save a couple several hundred dollars on park fees alone. Our Great Migration month by month guide helps if the river crossings are on your wish list.

Sample Kenya Honeymoon Safari Itineraries

A good Kenya honeymoon safari itinerary keeps transfers short and stays at least two or three nights in each place. These three routes are the ones we suggest most often, and each can be adjusted for budget, dates and the type of camp you prefer.

7-day Kenya honeymoon safari: Masai Mara and Diani

Fly from Nairobi to the Masai Mara for three nights of game drives, then fly back through Nairobi to Diani for three nights on the beach. This is the shortest route that still feels relaxed, and it suits couples with limited leave. In July to October, choose a camp near the river areas for a chance of crossings.

10-day Kenya honeymoon safari: Amboseli, Masai Mara and the coast

Start with two nights in Amboseli for elephants and Kilimanjaro views, fly or drive to the Masai Mara for three nights, then spend four nights in Diani or Lamu. This is our favourite balance of wildlife and rest, with two contrasting parks and enough beach time to recover from early starts.

14-day Kenya honeymoon safari: Laikipia, Masai Mara and Lamu

Begin with three nights in Laikipia or Ol Pejeta for rhinos and walking safaris, continue to a Masai Mara conservancy for four nights, then fly to Lamu for five or six nights. This longer route suits couples who want exclusive camps, more activities and a slower, more private feel.

Itinerary Route Best for
7 days Masai Mara (3 nights), Diani (3 nights) Short leave, first safari
10 days Amboseli (2), Masai Mara (3), Diani or Lamu (4) Best all-round honeymoon
14 days Laikipia (3), Mara conservancy (4), Lamu (5-6) Privacy, exclusive camps, slower pace

Flying between parks saves long drives and is often worth the extra cost on a honeymoon. Our fly-in safari packages show how air links between Nairobi, the parks and the coast work.

How Much Does a Kenya Honeymoon Safari Cost?

A Kenya honeymoon safari usually costs about US$350 to US$650 per person per day at mid-range camps and US$800 to US$1,800 or more per person per day at luxury conservancy camps. These estimates include lodging, meals, game drives and park fees but not international flights.

Park and conservancy fees are a fixed part of the bill. The Masai Mara National Reserve charged non-resident adults US$100 per day from January to June and US$200 from July to December, while Kenya Wildlife Service charged US$90 for Amboseli and Lake Nakuru and US$80 for Nairobi National Park and Tsavo (all checked October 2026). Confirm current rates before booking, as fees change; our Masai Mara entrance fee guide tracks the latest figures.

Budget tier Typical stays Estimated cost per person per day
Comfortable mid-range Permanent tented camps and lodges, shared or private vehicle US$350-650
Upper mid-range Smaller camps in conservancies, some fly-in legs US$650-900
Luxury Exclusive conservancy camps, private guide, fly-in throughout US$900-1,800+

Beach hotels on the coast usually cost less per night than safari camps because game drives and park fees are not included. Many lodges also add small honeymoon touches, such as a private dinner or a celebratory drink, when they are told in advance, so always mention your wedding date when you book.

Romantic Experiences to Add to Your Honeymoon

The most memorable additions to a Kenya honeymoon safari are a sunrise hot air balloon flight over the Masai Mara, a private bush dinner, a guided walk in a conservancy and a sunset dhow cruise on the coast. Each one adds a moment that feels like yours alone.

Balloon flights lift off at dawn and usually end with a champagne breakfast on the plains. Our guide to the Masai Mara balloon safari explains launch areas, timings and what is included. Book early in the dry season, because balloon places are limited.

Private bush dinners, sundowners on a hill and star-gazing from a deck are offered by many conservancy camps, and night drives let you look for animals that hide during the day. On the coast, a dhow sailing trip at sunset in Lamu or Watamu is the classic way to end a Kenya honeymoon safari.

Couples who like a little adventure can also add a bush and beach combination with snorkelling, or a day on the slopes of Mount Kenya. Our bush and beach safaris show how to join the parks and the coast in one smooth trip.

Insider Tips

  • Tell every camp: mention that you are on honeymoon when you book; many camps add small surprises
  • Stay longer, move less: two or three nights per camp feels far more relaxing than one-night stops
  • Pack light: light aircraft usually allow about 15kg per person in soft bags, so check your ticket and use our packing list
  • Ask for a double bed: some tents are set up as twins by default, so confirm your room type
  • Fly at least one leg: a short flight between the Mara and the coast saves a full day of driving
  • Insure the trip: choose a policy with medical evacuation and cancellation cover

For what to bring, start with our Kenya safari packing list, which covers neutral clothing, layers for cold early mornings and what fits into a soft bag.

A Kenya honeymoon safari typically costs about US$350 to US$650 per person per day at mid-range camps and US$800 to US$1,800 or more at luxury conservancy camps, including lodging, meals, game drives and park fees. These are estimates; flights, season and camp choice move the total most, so ask for a quote based on your dates.

Is Kenya or Tanzania better for a honeymoon safari?

Kenya and Tanzania are both excellent for a honeymoon safari. Kenya suits couples who want shorter transfers, private conservancies and an easy beach finish at Diani or Lamu. Tanzania suits couples who want the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Many couples choose Kenya for value and flexibility, or combine both countries on a longer trip.

Our Tanzania honeymoon guide covers the alternative in detail.

A Kenya honeymoon safari is safe for most couples when it is run by a licensed operator with professional guides and vetted camps. The usual precautions apply: follow your guide in the bush, avoid walking around cities after dark, check your government’s travel advice and take out travel insurance that includes medical evacuation.
